Battlestar Galactica Medallion

For the BSG medallion, I wanted to do something a little different than just a regular acrylic logo badge. Because of the strange front style I had planned I had to mount the slim-line slot-loading DVD drive virtually. This also produced a perfect opportunity to vertically mount the drive behind the medallion.

In addition, I cut a circular window in the top of the drive so you can see the disc spin along with the actuating arms working through the medallion. To my knowledge this hasn’t been done in a mod yet, so I hope this is a unique addition and another contribution of something new to the modding community.

The medallion was laser cut in separate layers from 1/4” and 1/8” acrylic, then glued together to provide depth. Red LEDs were added and then soldered together behind the centre bird inset to illuminate the inner workings of the drive, and provide a nice back-lit effect.

Front Panel

Preparing the rest of the front panel I took to it with a jigsaw to cut out the extra space I needed, then blanked off an area the same size of the Medallion so I could plan where to put things. Just like with the side panels the bare aluminium underneath was exposed by further sanding off the anodised covering. Further styrene plastic was clamped to shape it around the existing aluminium and provide further support for greebles and the extra height needed for it to meet the roof section.

To finish off the front panel and give it extra depth, I added Two other smaller rectangular styrene pieces were fabricated for the recesses. These used conduit and piping - wooden dowels and acrylic rods - to further match the roof and sides and to make it look like a continuation of an internal wall, along with tubing for wiring to the LCDs that would be placed above this. These went in the gaps above and below the Medallion to complete the look. The Battlestar Galactica lettering below the Medallion was also glued into position at the base before the whole thing was primed ready for further painting.
